This show will actually take place in one of New York's oldest family run gourmet butcher shops. The Essex Street is one of the oldest markets in New York, started by New York's government to ease pedestrian traffic.Today, the building is still owned by the City of New York. Almagul Menlibayeva: Daughters of Turan

LOCATION: Priska C. Juschka Fine Art

TIME:
11:00 AM - 06:00 PM

COST / ADMISSION: free

Priska C. Juschka Fine Art is pleased to present Daughters of Turan, Almagul Menlibayeva’s third solo exhibition of video and photography at the gallery. In the Steppes of her native Kazakhstan, Menlibayeva stages and films complex mythological narratives, with reference to her own nomadic heritage and the Shamanistic traditions of the cultures of Central Asia.

Daughters of Turan explores the emotional and spiritual residues of an ancient belief system as well as a historic conflict, still resonating among the peoples of Central Asia today, between the Zoroastrian ideology of former Persia, spreading widely across Eurasia and influencing Western politicians and philosophers and the Tengriism (sky religion) of the Turkic tribes, reaching as far as the Pacific Ocean. Tūrān, the ancient Iranian name for Central Asia, the land of the Tur, inhabited by nomadic tribes, takes center stage signifying the relationship between the male and the female principles ingrained in the stories, myths and ritual practices of a widespread population and its cultures.

The nurturing earth goddess Umai and favorite wife of Tengri, the god of the sky, much like Gaia in the Greek mythology, created life also gynogenetic, out of herself, and symbolizes the close relationship of the people to the land and its given riches, without agriculture, by animals and humans feeding off her body and drinking her milk. The elusive sky god Tengri, foremost living on in Christianity, where then becoming omnipotent, is here still in his adolescent phase – while Umai satiates the voracious appetite of her inhabitants, Tengri watches over her body, the plains of the great Steppes of Central Asia, playfully entertaining several other wives and fathering many children.

Menlibayeva reaches further into the psychological fabric of the people living today on the Steppes which their ancestors had traversed before they were forced to settle down, first by Persia and China to become peasants and in the 20th century by the Soviet Union in a cultural genocide. Umai, said to have sixty golden strands, still has her ‘daughters’ today, the female population, engaging in the same acts as their predecessors, symbolizing the circle of life, the most powerful Shaman symbol by making sure the circle remains undisturbed and intact, reflected in Menlibayeva’s video, Milk for Lambs. From this perspective, all men remain ultimately adolescent- feeding on the female riches, “When I look at the Steppe, it reminds me of my body, dry and in some places hairy,” referenced in all roundness of all things, “When I look at the round yurts and tables, they remind me of my breasts.” (lyrics, Milk for Lambs, Menlibayeva).

In her video Butterflies of Aisha Bibi, Menlibayeva recounts an ancient love story of the Sufi poet’s daughter Aisha Bibi and Karakhan, the Central Asian version of Romeo and Juliet, visually transforming it into a modern day drama of unfulfilled longing, unconditional love and its underlying gender discourse, addressing a never ceasing problematic synergy/symbiosis, deeply rooted in the civilizations born between the elements of earth and sky.

Almagul Menlibayeva was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan and lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin and holds an MFA from the Art and Theatre University of Almaty. She has gained international recognition exhibiting at the Sydney Biennial of Contemporary Art, 2006; the 51st, 52nd & 53rd Venice Biennale, 2005, 2007 & 2009; Tarjama/Translation at the Queens Museum of Art, 2009, and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum, Ithaca, NY, forthcoming 2010; and the Oberhausen Film Festival, Germany, 2009 & 2010. Menlibayeva’s video Kissing Totems is traveling in Off the Beaten Path, Stenersen Museum, Oslo; University Art Gallery, the University of California, San Diego, CA, 2009; El Cubo-Tijuana Cultural Center, Tijuana, Mexico; Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City, 2010; and forthcoming, Johannesburg Art Gallery, South Africa; COP10 Nagoya, Japan; and the UN Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo, China.

Panel discussion with TORCH teen filmmakers to follow

Space is limited. Please RSVP to:

Documentary Film Synopsis:
In the cosmopolitan metropolis of New York City, teenagers are presented with countless ways to spend their free time. Everyday teens may spend time with their friends; they work hard in school, play video games and live their lives (both online and in the real world) to their fullest; other teens become notorious for their less savory choices, with the media often pushing to perpetuate the image of the "juvenile delinquent." And still, there is a special breed of teenager that flies beyond either of these stereotypes and truly makes enormous strides to better their world while pursuing their dreams. They demonstrate tremendous empathy, whether it be with their peers, their family, or their community at large. These teenagers never take an opportunity for granted. Traveling the globe for humanitarian efforts, dedicating themselves to environmental awareness, making art with a message, and speaking out to inspire others are just some of this eclectic group’s passions. These teens teach a valuable lesson: never underestimate your own voice, dedication and ability to make a change in the world.

Arman, Corrine, Molly, Pascal, and Zora. These are our teen heroes. These are the Skyscrapers.

Drawing on the research in his new book, "Making Ideas Happen," Behance Founder & CEO Scott Belsky will give an overview of key tips and insights for pushing ideas forward. The morning will kick off with 30 minutes of coffee & networking. The presentation will start at 9:00am sharp, and be followed by a Q&A.

ABOUT "MAKING IDEAS HAPPEN" BY SCOTT BELSKY
Many of us believe that great ideas inevitably lead to success. Nothing could be further from the truth. Whether it is the perfect solution for an everyday problem or a bold new concept for a creative masterpiece, you must transform vision into reality for an idea to have value.

"Making Ideas Happen" chronicles the methods of exceptionally productive creative leaders and teams – companies like Google, IDEO, and Disney, and individuals like author Chris Anderson and Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh – that make their ideas happen, time and time again.

Midtown Manhattan is a tourist destination for good reason. It is full of some of the best buildings—and hence best lettering—in the city since it is the heart of 20th c. New York. It is not only the home of Art Deco and Gothic Revivalist skyscrapers but it also contains major churches, hotels and schools that are worthy of the letter-hunter. This is an opportunity to see what you have overlooked during your day-to-day business trips to the area. And to see what the tourists are missing.

11 am to 2 pm Meet in front of Grand Central Terminal across from Pershing Square (42nd Street at Park Avenue). Bring cameras, notebooks, a sandwich, etc. and wear walking shoes.

Paul Shaw is widely known and respected as a guide to urban lettering. With Garrett Boge he co-founded and led the original Legacy of Letters tours of Rome, Florence and Tuscany from 1997 to 2000. On his own he has conducted regular walking tours of lettering in New York City since 2005 for the Type Directors Club and other organizations. He has also led similar tours of Boston, Buffalo and Atlanta for SoTA (the Society of Typographic Aficionados). Paul has been a calligrapher for over 40 years and has designed 18 typefaces. Once Upon A Time: Beirut (Kan Ya Makan Beirut) directed by Jocelyne Saab May 11, 2010 12:30, 4 & 7:30PM French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) Florence Gould Hall 55 East 59th Street New York, NY 10022 Distraught over Beirut's destruction, Yasmine and Leila embark on a journey in search of its past. Their possession of two rare, unreleased film reels lands them an encounter with Monsieur Farouk, a reclusive film connoisseur. Through the magic of cinema, the three of them go back in time on a mythical and history-laden tour of the city. Here the movie shines with images of Beirut from the large-scale American studio efforts of the 1970's to the Beirut of the 1960's as seen through the lenses of Arab filmmakers, to the French-directed films of the 1930s. Once Upon A Time: Beirut (Kan Ya Makan Beirut) offers an enchanting look at one of the Middle East's most complex and beautiful cities.

BrooklynArtProject.com is proud to present com.passion, a crowd-sourced contemporary art book project that celebrates humankind's greatest virtue in our ever-challenged world. From the global financial crisis to natural disasters of unprecedented proportion, people from all walks of life are in need — we believe artists and creative use of social media can help.

Collaborative mixed media submissions and crowd-sourced tweets will be curated by a panel of judges and published in a limited edition, full color, hardcover book. All proceeds will go directly to benefit the American Cancer Society. The book will be launched in summer of 2010.

TDC Silent Auction: Beautiful Banal

06:00 PM - 09:00 PM

COST / ADMISSION: TDC members are free - Non members $20 - Non Student members $15

This exhibit is a silent auction raising money for the TDC Scholarship Fund. Each designer/typographer is being asked to use the vernacular of a classified or personal ad (one of their choosing from a local source or newspaper). Classified print ads are extremely common, but are often ignored or taken for granted. When redesigned, the once banal message will be overpowered with a new typographic and visual language.

In this session our speakers will talk about 3 jobs they think will be big in the future and how current roles have started to change. Come and learn how to be a superstar of the future. Typographic tattoo expert Ina Saltz will share images and the fascinating stories behind the tattoos from her new book, "Body Type 2: More Typographic Tattoos" (the sequel to "Body Type: Intimate Messages Etched in Flesh"). And she has invited some typographically tattooed guests to show their typographic commitment "in the flesh;" many are art directors, creatives, type designers, et al. The power of type and the beauty of words on skin will surprise and (possibly) shock you. Do the font selection and the chosen text send the same message? You be the judge.

TIME:
06:00 PM - 08:00 PM

COST / ADMISSION: Free

Calling all advertising copy writers.  Yes, we call it copy, that stuff you grind out every day.  But isn't it really poetry -- concise, intense, emotive words designed to stir the emotions so powerfully that the reader will fork over some cash?  Byron knew all about this.  So did Shelley, Whitman, Emily Dickinson.  Sure their heads were in the cosmos, but part of them (you know which part) was thinking of getting paid or getting laid.  Now you can get the literary recognition you deserve by reading your words at the The One Slam -- the 1st Annual Copy Writers Poetry Smackdown -- Wednesday night May 12th at the world-famous Bowery Poetry Club.

Just RSVP below with your name, name of your agency or company, and maybe something personal and endearing about yourself.  Then come to the Bowery Poetry Club and read your copy -- it can be any copy, a love poem, political screed, shopping list, an ad too artistic for your philistine client to comprehend -- just something short and powerful that you wrote.  You'll win prizes, applause and finally the literary acclaim you've always wanted.  Who knows -- you may even get laid.

Type Directors Club Walking Tour of Manhattan-Flatiron District and Union Square

Since the 1980s this has been the creative heart of New York City. But instead of looking at design firms and advertising agencies this is an opportunity to walk the streets and see the lettering that helps give these two neighborhoods so much of their charm. Instead of Art Deco we will see a wider range of letterforms dating from the late 19th c. to the 1970s. Even a cemetery.

11 am to 2 pm meet at the Flatiron Building (intersection of Fifth Avenue, Broadway and 23rd Street).

The history of photography is that of the still life, a staple of artwork throughout the modern era that has been reinvented with the introduction of photography. From the beginning, virtually every important photographer has contributed to the genre, and their names evoke an immense range of images and approaches: Henry Fox-Talbot, Paul Strand, Edward Steichen, Josef Sudek, László Moholy-Nagy, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Edward Weston, Tina Modotti, Man Ray, Walker Evans, Robert Mapplethorpe and Wolgfang Tillmans, among others.

With this long tradition in mind, Vince Aletti has taken the occasion of the New York Photo Festival to reexamine the still life today. Object Lesson, according to Aletti, “pays homage to one of its masters, Irving Penn, whose work sets a standard few can match.”

Through social media and real-world art collaborations at 5 Front Bistro BAr and Garden in Brooklyn, artists and designers are invited to create  submissions together during Creative Week (May 11-16) that remind us what it means to be human - and why compassion is so highly revered across all the world's major religions.

Starting May 1st, artworks for digital collaboration may be submitted online at Brooklynartproject.com. As Is
Penelope Umbrico
May 13 – June 20th, 2010
Opening: Thursday, May 13, 6-9 pm

LMAKprojects is pleased to present three series of work by Penelope Umbrico: Broken Sets (eBay), 2009- 2010, Zenith Replacement Parts, 2009, and Desk Trajectories (As Is), 2010. Mining the Internet for its idealized fictions of a technologically obsessed society, Umbrico creates taxonomies of images that point to a deflation or rupture in these fictions. Employing methods of appropriation, extraction, and accumulation, Umbrico extracts details from these images that belie an optimism usually associated with this content.

Broken Sets (eBay) are images of the screens cropped from pictures of broken LCD TVs Umbrico found on eBay.com, where they are sold for parts. The sellers turn on the TVs while photographing them so that potential buyers can see that the electronics behind the screens work. Umbrico became interested in the incidental abstract beauty of the screens because they are derived from the breakdown and failure of their own promising technology. By presenting these inadvertent abstract compositions as formal compositions in their own right, Umbrico collapses the obsolescence and breakdown of new technology with the aesthetic formalism of utopian Modernist abstraction.

Zenith Replacement Parts are photographs, also taken from eBay, of dusty cardboard boxes containing Zenith replacement parts. What intrigued Umbrico about these images was the seller’s belief in the photograph - that a picture of the box storing the part would lend more veracity to the objects inside, than to simply list the parts numbers. The reductiveness of the box form and its repetition is further emphasized by Umbrico’s gridding of them, turning them into a Judd-like eulogy.

A reoccurring theme in Umbrico's work is the examination of how unattainable lifestyles are marketed, lusted after, and devoured by consumers. She highlights underlying cultural longings of a consumer subject allowing it to be replaced by a fictional, idealized, non-existent abstraction. This sentiment is poignantly illustrated in Desk Trajectories (As Is), 2010. If a new office desk promises the ultimate in organization and productivity, these same desks on craigslist and eBay, by virtue of the fact that they are “used” and out of commission, represent the exact opposite: a deflated and empty sign of productivity. No longer useful, and taking up too much space, these desks have been subsumed to an economy of re-appropriation, value deflation, and physical degradation.

The term As Is indicates a good bargain with perhaps some flaw, but taken here as an ontological statement, As Is points to a sort of existential anxiety: its reason for being is hinged on its potential for facilitating productivity, and its form is a testament to ideologies of a clean, elegant modernist aesthetic. In these pictures, all efficiency, productivity and elegance is in question.

Penelope Umbrico has had numerous solo exhibitions, including International Center of Photography, NY; Julie Saul Gallery, NY; Bernard Toale Gallery, Boston; P|M Gallery, Toronto; and her work has been included in group shows at the Museum of Modern Art, NY; Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane Australia; Bard College, NY; Massachusetts College of Art, Boston; Art in General, NY; Gallery 44, Toronto; Dazibao, Montreal; Ansel Adams Center for Photography, CA; Santa Barbara Museum of Art, CA. Umbrico’s work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; International Center of Photography; Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. She is the recipient of an Anonymous Was A Woman Award; New York Foundation for the Arts, Artists Fellowship; a New York Foundation for the Arts, Catalogue Project Grant; an Aaron Siskind Foundation Individual Photographer’s Fellowship Grant; and a Harvestworks Scholar Fellowship.

AIGA/NY Presents COLLABORATION: MIRKO ILIC AND DANIEL YOUNG

LOCATION: Museum of Arts and Design

TIME:
06:30 PM - 08:00 PM

COST / ADMISSION: $13

COLLABORATION: MIRKO ILIC AND DANIEL YOUNG

What happens when a designer and a former lawyer decide to take on the problems of the world? Mirco Ilic and Daniel Young have teamed up to be Ralph Nader, Robin Hood, Mother Theresa and maybe even Don Quixote, all rolled into one. They put the "pro" back in pro bono—not only do they create work for free, they actually self-finance the projects for causes they believe in. Even more than making different causes public, these guys like to make trouble. Come and hear about how they infuriated religious leaders in Jerusalem, and how they took their political provocations to the skies over Florida. It is said that necessity is the mother of invention, but for Mirko and Daniel, it is sensitivity, compassion and altruism. For them, that's necessity!

Mirko Ilic Corp. was established in 1995 as a multi-disciplinary studio specializing in graphic design, 3D animation, motion picture titles, and illustration. Mirko has written several books with Steve Heller, including Genius Moves: 100 Icons of Graphic Design, Handwritten, and The Anatomy of Design. He has also written The Design of Dissent with Milton Glaser. Mirko has taught advanced design classes at the Cooper Union and currently teaches master degree classes in illustration at the School of Visual Arts.

Daniel Young lives and works in New York City. He graduated from Cornell University and Columbia University Law School. He worked as a lawyer in the field of international trade. In 1988 he met Milton Glaser and, under his influence, changed from a lawyer into an inventor and designer. Young founded Paradoxy Products in 2005, a company dedicated to making design objects which cross the borders between fun and philosophy, and between design and art.

Each month, "Collaboration" will examine the process of co-creation; it will look closely at collaborative outcomes as we all learn to work with each other.

Join us to discover the pros and cons of working with experts in our field and others.

Recent Work Predrag Dimitrijevič Non-objective painting is a form of madness lost to civilization some 20 years ago. Predrag Dimitrievich returns it with dispassionate vengeance. It’s checkmate from the get-go. These are bear-trap visual conundrums of geometric splendor. Predrag D. engineers impossible virtual nestings of pure space and form.

They are plotted ten moves ahead and as satisfyingly intelligent as a watchmaker’s palace of function.

Every element seems to rhyme itself into being as a cerebrated echo of the whole. They are puzzles without beginning or end, trance-circuit mazes to tease your retinal brain. The sophisticated drawing harks back to the complicated mechanics of another era. But the elegant, unforgettably mysterious solutions hint at the behind-the-scenes insanity of advanced contemporary science. Predrag D. makes no concessions to the twin love-buttons cute and funny. These are demanding paintings that, if you’re not careful, you might well fall into. Unlike their utopian forebears of the 1920s and 60s, they register an anxious and unrelenting logic that refuses to synthesize at a simple glance. They are raindrops in the optical pond, leading you in insistently to super-highways of thought.

The future of fonts as we know them is ever-changing. To help prognosticate, we're collecting some of the industry's leaders and asking them to explain what's coming next, why and how it will effect our everyday. We'll touch on lettering, foundries, collectives, technology and applications as well as web, customization and licensing.

Typographers are a rare and specialized breed, so we'll keep an expert moderator on hand to translate and provoke. Questions for the discussion will be taken via Twitter leading up to and during the event. To pose a question, use the hashtag #freshd or address @freshdialogue.

Unnervingly handsome and fluent in both German and English, he has no recollection of who he is - patriot or Nazi…innocent or madman. GABRIEL explores the heart of memory, identity and imagination, as well as the lies people tell themselves and each other to make the darkness light again. Written by Moira Buffini.

LOCATION: 81 Front Street, DUMBO,Brooklyn.

TIME:
12:00 PM - 10:00 PM

COST / ADMISSION: $15 (Student/Senior: $10)

DESCRIPTION: GABRIEL is set around a largely forgotten moment in British history - the German occupation of the Channel Islands during World War II. A naked young man washes up on a Guernsey beach. Directed by David Esbjornson. With Patricia Conolly, Lisa Emery, Zach Grenier, Lee Aaron Rosen, Samantha Soule, and Libby Woodbridge.
